Oreos are one of the most well-loved and popular cookies in the US and in certain parts of the world. The tagline on their website reads
‘The world’s favorite cookie. Delicious and full of Wonder for over 100 years!’
What’s so special about this cookie, you ask? Picture this: a delectable layer of sweet cream sandwiched between two delicious wafers of chocolate. If your stomach isn’t rumbling, there’s something wrong with you.
Since it was first made, over 362 billion Oreo cookies have been sold and consumed! And it doesn’t look like these cream-filled cookies are ever leaving the A-list.
The World’s Favorite Cookie
Oreo’s were first developed and produced by the National Biscuit Company (known today as Nabisco) in 1912. As of 1974, Oreo’s have been referred to as the ‘Chocolate Sandwich Cookie’. The reason behind the name ‘Oreo’ is uncertain. Some claim that it is derived from the French word ‘or’ which means gold, and this is supported by the fact that Oreos were initially wrapped in golden paper. Others believe that the name is from the Greek word ‘Oreo’ which means beautiful, nice, or well done.
Today, the cookie is so popular that it has even appeared in movies! In 2012, the animated movie Wreckit Ralph featured Oreo cookies as royal guards in King Candy’s castle.
Chocolate Sandwich Cookies with…more Chocolate!
I don’t think we can stress enough just how popular these cookies are. There are over a hundred different types of Oreos and the cookie also comes in different shapes. There are even Oreo ice-creams, cakes, and chocolate bars.
Some popular examples of the many variations of this treat are:
- Double Stuffed Oreos
- Oreo Mini’s
- Strawberry Oreo
- Chocolate Oreo
- Peanut Butter Oreo
- Mint Oreo
- Banana Split Oreo
- Cookie Dough Oreo
- Red Velvet Oreo
Chocolate Oreo’s are of particular interest to us. Now, not only do you have two wafers of chocolate, but also an additional layer of chocolate cream inside. Chocoholics rejoice! We all know what we chocoholics have to do thanks to Terry Moore:
‘The 12-step chocoholics program: NEVER BE MORE THAN 12 STEPS AWAY FROM CHOCOLATE!’
Because the love of chocolate is so pervasive, chocolate Oreo’s have been transformed by many notable confectioners into gourmet treats. Did you know that Godiva, the famous Belgian chocolaterie, makes chocolate covered Oreos? Yes, you read that correctly. Everyone’s favorite cookie covered with layers of rich Belgian chocolate. How’s that for a sophisticated twist to a classic treat!
Many other famous chocolateirs also offer chocolate covered Oreos. These treats can be drizzled with more chocolate, caramel, or toffee sauce and covered with a number of exciting toppings. Anything from nuts to candy bits and sprinkles: the possibilities are endless.
Chocolate Oreo’s are a new spin on a classic cookie. Over a 100 years since Oreo’s first burst out on the cookie scene, these cookies are now a classic favorite among both the young and the not so young. So grab a nice cold glass of milk, or warm milk if you like, take out a few Oreos and get ready: twist the two chocolate wafers in opposite directions, lick that delicious chocolate cream, and dunk them. Repeat as often as necessary.
